24AUT68 (LL) Using Retrieval Practice as a Revision Tool in Leaving Certificate Geography

24AUT68 (LL) Using Retrieval Practice as a Revision Tool in Leaving Certificate Geography

In this session, Lee will share his innovative approach to utilising retrieval practice specifically for LC Geography students. He will explain how this technique can effectively combat the natural process of forgetting that begins as soon as students acquire new information. By integrating retrieval practice into various stages of a lesson, Lee aims to solidify students' grasp of geographical concepts and reduce the workload for teachers in the long run.

Lee's strategy revolves around building a culture of retrieval both inside and outside the classroom, ensuring that students continually engage with the material they have learned. He will detail how he applies this approach at four critical points in a lesson: 1. "Do Now Activities" at the beginning to kickstart recall. 2. Checks for prerequisite knowledge. 3. During periods of independent student practice. 4. Homework assignments. 5. Retrieval Revision Booklets

A key feature of Lee's methodology is the use of a core knowledge bank of questions and answers, tailored to the needs of LC Geography students. This allows for effective and efficient implementation of retrieval practice at each stage of the lesson. Particularly noteworthy is his use of online quizzing platforms for homework. About 70% of his homework assignments consist of retrieval practice quizzes. These quizzes are self-correcting and encourage students to reflect and correct their answers, thereby preventing the development of misconceptions.

This session promises to be a valuable resource for teachers seeking to enhance their students' retention of geographical knowledge and streamline their own teaching methods.

This FREE webinar with Lee O'Donnell is a collaboration in partnership between Dublin West Education Support Centre, Blackrock Education Support Centre, Drumcondra Education Support Centre, Kildare Education Support Centre and Laois Education Support Centre, and is suitable for Post Primary teachers.
