25SPR37 How to Support Anxious Students: Strategies for SNAs

25SPR37 How to Support Anxious Students: Strategies for SNAs

Anxiety is one of the most prevalent challenges affecting students today, impacting their ability to learn, socialize, and thrive.

This webinar provides SNAs and school staff with essential knowledge about the science behind anxiety, including the roles of the amygdala and the brain-gut connection. Explore the various types of anxiety that students may experience—such as separation anxiety, selective mutism, and social anxiety—and learn how these can influence their academic and social development.

This session will also offer practical strategies to support anxious students, including mindfulness techniques, the power of building healthy habits, and creative approaches like "worry time" and the "Lego Jar." By understanding the root causes and having a toolkit of strategies, educators can create an environment where anxious students feel safe, supported, and empowered.

By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand the Science of Anxiety: Explain the biological and psychological mechanisms behind anxiety, including the role of the amygdala, the brain-gut connection, and the fight-flight-freeze-fawn responses.
  2. Identify and Differentiate Types of Anxiety: Recognise the characteristics and impacts of various anxiety disorders such as separation anxiety, selective mutism, social anxiety, panic disorder, OCD, and anxiety about world events.
  3. Implement Effective Support Strategies: Apply practical strategies such as mindfulness exercises, structured worry time, and habit-forming techniques to help anxious students manage their emotions and build resilience.

This webinar is suitable for Primary and Post Primary School Leaders, Teachers, SETs, SNAs & Parents
